The weight of the world can feel omnipresent at times. So heavy, in fact, that it can cloak your personal story with the negativity of the world around you.

Your brain evolved with a negativity bias — a mechanism that prioritizes threatening information to keep you alive. For the vast majority of human history, we've been wired to pay attention to the bad stuff and lock it into long-term memory faster than positive stimuli. On the savannah, failing to spot a predator — like a lion in the brush — was deadly. So your ancestors' brains got very good at scanning for danger.

That mechanism saved humanity for millennia.

But right now, you're not on the savannah. You're scrolling through millions of virtual lions reported from every corner of the globe, every second of the day. Your stress response — the one designed for immediate physical threats — is now permanently on.

Attention is like a telescope of your experience. Whatever you point it at, you magnify. Point it at the virtual lions and they grow. Point it at your own unique outcomes — those moments where you acted with agency, resilience, courage — and you begin to rewrite that inner monologue.

When you deliberately give attention to your story instead of the news cycle, something neurological happens.

Stories release cortisol (which formulates memories), dopamine (which regulates emotional response), and oxytocin (which creates empathy). Research shows stories are 22 times more memorable than facts alone. When we engage with story — whether writing our own or listening to another — we experience speaker-listener neural coupling: our brain waves literally synchronize with the narrative, moving us out of the lonely virtual savannah and back into communal safety.

This isn't theory. It's how I survived 2020.
